What’s under your couch?

If your house is like ours, there’s stuff under there. You won’t know it until you vacuum, but then you see the truth. A little pet hair. A pinch of leaves or dirt. A renegade Cheeto. But despite all this, you enjoy your couch. You know you’re going to clean under there every week, so you make allowances in the meantime. Grace is like that. It overlooks stuff for the moment because it is confident the cleaning will come.

The Bible says; “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Pet 4:8) In other words, God wants me to give people space to grow. He wants me to bear with my friends (and enemies!) who haven’t got it all figured out yet, because He is at work in their lives and He knows what He’s doing. It took time for you to come to repentance about certain things – give other people time as well. God was patient with you, and He wants you to be patient with them. This is the way of love, and it never fails. So I wonder who needs your patience as they struggle to get their sins untangled? I heard a guy say, “No one becomes old and wise without first being young and stupid.” Yes. Be true!
